A visit to a friend’s house left Brigitte with fireplace envy. Three-sided fireplace envy, to be exact. There was nothing doing but Brigitte had to add a new fireplace to her kitchen/dining area. Easy, with a little help from Anthony.

DO check with the fireplace supplier to make sure that you have an appropriate location, with proper venting, for your fireplace.

DON’T install the fireplace without preparing the base properly.

  1. Let a fireplace professional assist you in the purchase of a fireplace that is right for your needs. Arrange for professional installation of the gas lines and attachments.
  2. A gas fireplace requires a certified technician for the gas hook-up but you can do the prep work yourself.
  3. Place the fireplace against the wall in the place where you would like it to be located. Measure and mark the location where the fireplace will be vented.
  4. Read the instruction manual and prepare the wall according to the requirements stated for your model. If your wall contains combustible materials (insulation, wood, etc.) you may need to install a metal casing.

  5. Now you’re ready to prepare the base. Build a rectangular base out of 2 x 4’s to the same dimensions as the fireplace. (see fig. A)
  6. Place the base. Level it carefully and screw into place.
  7. A piece of cement board cut to the right dimensions is needed as a non-combustible insulator between the fireplace and the floor. Place this board on top of the wooden frame and screw into place. (see fig. B)

  8. Place the fireplace into position and wait for the gas contractor to make the appropriate connections. (see figs. C & D)
  9. Brigitte decided to give her fireplace a more elegant look by adding a granite top. She had her granite piece cut to measure and then glued it into position with silicon. (see figs. E & F)
