Brigitte found great used chairs for her dining room at an antique store. And the added bonus – they didn’t smell like cat pee! The problem was, they were a little too short. Brigitte had a brilliant solution.

  • Antique chairs have wood with great character. Sometimes though, the chairs were made shorter than we require for today’s modern table heights. If you want to add extra height to chairs in an attractive way without a lot of fiddly measuring, here’s an idea. (see fig. A)

  • Go to your building supply store and buy spindles for use in stair rails – the kind with decorative balls included in the lathe pattern. Cut the decorative ball portions off of the spindle. These are usually about 1-½ inches long or, the perfect size to add height to your chairs. Sand to a smooth finish. Paint or stain to match the chairs and then nail into place. (see figs. B & C)
