When Brigitte heard a crash and discovered the end of a huge beam sticking through her roof, she was understandably unhappy – at first. But when opportunity knocks, answer the door! It was a perfect time to add a skylight.

DO buy a good quality skylight.

DON’T install it yourself. Most leaks involving skylights are caused by improper installation techniques.

Let the Sun Shine In

Brigitte is an optimist. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life puts a hole in your roof, install a skylight.
  1. Consider the best location for your skylight. If you have a tall stairwell that lacks light and traps air, a skylight can brighten up the area and provide better air circulation. Consider how the skylight will look from the exterior of the building as well.
  2. If your roof or wall has a slant of 15 to 85 degrees, there is no need to build up the area around the installation. Flat roofs or walls with only a slight angle require some additional prep work.

  3. Brigitte chose a Velux skylight for her roof opening. They come in many different sizes and styles. You can opt for a simple skylight that just lets the light shine in or you can get a model with blinds (Venetian or solid) and several different electronic options. (see fig. A)
  4. Brigitte’s skylight comes equipped with a remote control. (If only she could get it away from Anthony. What is it about men and remote controls?) The remote control allows her to open or close the window, the blinds, or both. (see fig. B)
  5. Brigitte also chose a model with a rain sensor. At the first drop of rain the skylight will close. Now that’s a good use of technology.

  6. Each skylight comes complete with flashing and ice and water shield. In order for the warranty to be valid, the skylight must be wrapped with roof underlayment. This is a rubber material that prevents leaks. (see figs. C & D)

  7. If your skylight is professionally installed there should be no worries about leakage. Each skylight has a 20-year warranty against seal failure. (see figs. E & F)
  8. Anthony, give Brigitte the remote! (see figs. G & H)
