A few sleepless nights led Brigitte to realize that her headboard was looking rather blah. She added copper leaf and suddenly she had a bedroom showpiece.

DO prepare the surface properly. It should be clean, smooth and dust free.

DON’T start this project if you’re on the run. Set aside a solid chunk of time.

A Polished Copper Finish

It’s painstaking work and requires a delicate touch but copper leaf provides a stunning enhancement to ordinary furnishings.
  1. Copper leaf is available in sheets approximately 5 inches by 5 inches in size. You can buy smaller quantities (20 sheets) or larger quantities, depending on the size of your project.
  2. Prepare the surface that you wish to cover. When it is clean and dust free, apply a coat of special adhesive, called “sizing” to the entire surface. (see fig. A)
  3. Let the sizing dry until it is tacky but not yet dry.

  4. Each sheet of copper leaf is protected on two sides as you take it out of the package. Carefully remove the protective coating on one side and gently apply the copper leaf to the surface.
  5. Use a “squirrel mop” to gently tap the copper leaf into place and remove any air bubbles. (see fig. B)
  6. Remove the second piece of protective paper. (see fig. C)

  7. You can spot patch any areas the may have torn or lifted with the protective paper. To do this, gently place the copper leaf over the exposed area and tap into place. (see fig. D)
  8. Once the copper leafing is complete, allow the surface to dry thoroughly and then protect with Varethane. This prevents the delicate surface from being scratched or damaged. It also prevents the oxidation, or greening, of the copper surface. (see figs. E & F)
