If you’ve tried warm milk, counted more sheep than you care to remember and STILL can’t get to sleep, try adding a bit of luxury to your bedroom. At the very least you’ll be more comfortable while those sheep go drifting by.

DO buy the best quality, if possible. Beds, duvets and sheets last for a long time. Often just a small amount of extra money can mean a big difference in quality. It’s worth it in the long run.

DON’T fall asleep on the beds in the store!

Sumptuous Slumber
A bout of insomnia had Brigitte seeking solutions to her sleeplessness. Some plush additions to her bedroom décor meant that she could sleep in comfort once again.
- The place to start is the bed. You should be looking for a bed that offers comfort, the right support and longevity. Brigitte chose a bed with a euro pillow top surface. It is plush and soft, doesn’t put pressure on pressure points and ensures proper blood flow. Her mattress also included a unicase design. This design means that the support on the sides of the bed is the same as in the middle. (see fig. A)
- To make your mattress last as long as possible, it should be rotated (top to bottom) and flipped every three months.

- Protect your mattress with a good quality mattress cover.
- Next you need sheets. We spend one-third of our lives sleeping so we might as well have the best sheets available! When you buy sheets, consider the thread count. That is, the number of threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the more luxurious the sheet. Sheets with a high thread count are more comfortable and more resistant to pilling. It’s best not to buy sheets with a thread count below 270. Sheets that are 100% cotton are the most comfortable. (see fig. B)
- But you’re terrific new sheets need to be cared for properly. They should be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. This prevents pilling and helps them keep their shape.
- Don’t wash sheets with towels!
- Don’t wear heavy materials to bed. With sheets this comfortable you don’t want those flannel jammies anyway.
- Make sure that you buy sheets that fit your mattress properly. A mattress with a pillow top requires fitted sheets with deep pockets.

- A duvet and duvet cover are next. Down-filled duvets offer the most comfort and the best regulation of body temperature. You need one with baffles sewn throughout the interior of the duvet to keep the down from shifting and settling. The duvet cover should have a high thread count, like your sheets. (see fig. C)
- The finishing touch is a really great pillow. Once Brigitte’s head hit her new goose down pillow, she was off to dreamland. If you prefer something firmer, there are some excellent foam ones available. But don’t count on a foam pillow lasting for long. They tend to flatten or lose shape after only a couple of years. A good quality goose down pillow can last a decade or longer. (see fig. D)
