Since the garage is a little dark for a work space, Brigitte takes her wad of bills to the Habitat for Humanity Restore, where she finds inexpensive windows for the garage...

DO check the weather forecast before you decide to replace windows.

DO make chicken soup for your sick handyman. He’ll be indebted to you.

DON’T expect him not to bill you for his time. You do all the work and he just “advises” you. And he expects to get paid for that? Sheesh!

Window on the World

  1. Measure the window and measure and mark the spot on the wall where the window will be hung.
  2. Since Brigitte had to cut through a stud with a reciprocating saw, she had to put in cripple studs and a header between the two studs on either side of the space for the window. These are pieces of wood that will go on the sides and top of the window. Nail the king studs (your original studs) into your header to secure them.
  3. Nail the jack studs to the cripple studs. The jack studs are other pieces of wood cut for the bottom of the window. Across the tops of the jack studs, nail in the sill. At the end, what you have created is letter “H” of wood studs.
  4. If the window is not the actual size of the space between studs, you will have to close in the sides of the opening. Basically, you are adding more studs. So measure the length of your window and add one inch for the frame. Nail your studs in at this point.
  5. Now that you have your window size set, drill a large hole in each corner of the window space. Using the reciprocating saw, cut the opening for the window by sawing from drill hole to drill hole.
  6. If your window doesn’t already have a frame, glue and nail some wood trim to each side of the window.
  7. Use ½ inch spacers on the window to ensure that you will have a ½ inch gap all around the window when you put it in. Put the window with attached frame into your rough opening and nail it to the wall.
  8. Clean the glass and let the sun shine in!
