Brigitte’s garage door had a perfect skunk-sized hole – at least the skunk thought so. And Brigitte’s dog, Torchy, found the aroma of the new garage tenant too tempting to resist. Time for new garage doors!

DO consult a garage door specialist. A properly functioning garage door requires careful adjustments.

DON’T pay someone to take out your old door. That’s a job that you can handle yourself. It’s like taking apart a jigsaw puzzle, piece by piece.

Garage Doors, One Panel at a Time

  1. Consider the type of garage door that is right for you. Brigitte has a steel door with a wood look. It is maintenance-free, less expensive and readily available. You can opt for an insulated door if you want to have greater control over the temperature in your garage.
  2. Taking an old garage door off looks like an intimidating job but it is quite manageable. Tackle the job step by step and it is done in no time.

  3. Start with the door closed. You take out one panel at a time, starting from the top. Loosen the screws, remove the hinges and lift the panels out. (Pretty simple, huh?) (see fig. A & B)
  4. Remove the tracks. (see fig. C)
  5. A good garage door installation requires good framing. It’s advisable to start from scratch here, in Brigitte’s case. Remove old 2 x 4s from the sides and the headers. Install a new 2 x 4s along the sides and a new 2 x 6 across the top. (see fig. D)

  6. Now you’re ready for some professional assistance. Garage door specialists install your new garage doors quickly and easily. (see figs. E, F, & G)

  7. To give the garage door a finished appearance (and to keep out the weather) install weather stripping around the exterior edges. (see figs. H & I)
