Brigitte is feeling the earth move – thanks to the subwoofer in her new home screening room. Brigitte tossed out the rabbit ears and brought in the plasma screen TV, along with a few other vital home entertainment centre necessities.

DO save up your pennies. You don’t want your credit card to burst into flames.

DON’T forget the popcorn maker. What theatre would be complete without a popcorn maker?

  1. Shop around for your entertainment equipment. Talk to knowledgeable sales staff who will give you equipment that meets your needs without breaking your budget. A reputable dealer will be sure to honour the warranties for your new toys.
  2. A home screening room needs a big honkin’ TV, DVD player, receiver, five speakers and a subwoofer. (see fig. A)
  3. Buy a good quality receiver. The receiver of your entertainment centre is kind of like the engine for your car. You might get away with less expensive speakers and a bargain DVD player but a cheap receiver will definitely affect the quality of your viewing experience. (see fig. B)

  4. Three speakers go in the front of your screening room - left, right and centre. Two speakers go in the back – left and right. This provides the “surround sound” experience. (see figs. C & D)

  5. The subwoofer is the kicker! It provides the rumble, the impact, the power… The subwoofer is a square box with the speaker on the bottom pointing toward the floor. It is placed in a corner so that the sound travels throughout the room. And remember, it’s a speaker, not a coffee table. If you place a glass on top, it’ll shake right off. (see fig. E)
  6. With these elements in place, add some lounge chairs, end tables, subdued lighting and you have a heart-pounding, jaw-dropping, envy-inducing home entertainment centre. (see fig. F)
  7. Do I smell popcorn?
