Previous Project | Installing a Gas Fireplace Project List

Nothing is ever straightforward in Brigitte’s life, it seems. Returning from her gig on a cruise ship, she’s looking forward to unpacking and cuddling with “Moo Cow.” But there’s been a luggage mix-up and she has to arrange a suitcase swap with a man who works at a fireplace centre. Brigitte leaves The Fireplace Centre and Patio Shop with her suitcase and the Valor “Windsor Arch” model for her living room, but no “Moo Cow.” Brigitte must spend her next few days installing her new fireplace and tracking down the “Moo Cow” culprit.

DO read the installation manual carefully.

DO call a certified technician for the gas hook-up.

My Hearth Beats for You

While the installation of a gas fireplace requires a certified technician for the gas hook-up, you can do the prep work yourself. If you follow the installation instructions that come with your fireplace model, you can save money by doing the prep work before calling the professionals.
  1. Remove any existing baseboards. If they are unique or historic like Brigitte’s, remove them carefully and save them for reinstallation.
  2. Place the interior of the fireplace against the wall in the place where you would like it to be located.
  3. Measure and mark the location where the exhaust fan will be vented to the outside.

  4. If the wall is made from a non-flammable material, you can simply cut a round hole the size of the vent pipe. But if your wall contains combustible materials (insulation, wood, etc.) you must prepare a ten-inch square opening to accommodate a metal casing. (see fig. A)
  5. To cut the opening, using a long bit, drill four holes, one at each corner on the marked hole. Then, using a reciprocating saw cut around the perimeter.
  6. Remove any materials from inside the opening. (see. fig. B)
  7. Wave to your friends through the hole – how often do you drill holes through your house? (see fig. C)

  8. Place the metal casing into the opening and screw into place. (see fig. D)
  9. Seal the edges with fire resistant caulking. (see fig. E)
  10. If you want to be nice, you can drill the hole for the gas pipe through the floor – or you can let the technician do that part.

  11. Slide the fireplace into place. (see fig. F)
  12. Call the pros to hook-up the gas and soon you can bask in the warmth of a new gas fireplace. (see fig. G)
