Spray-painting a basement ceiling gives a “trendy downtown loft” look without a lot of work and without lowering the ceiling height. In fact, a ceiling painted a light colour makes the room look higher. And it’s fun!
Trigger-happy Ceiling Transition
- Okay, you need to make sure that the prep work is done before you get down to the fun stuff. Spray-painting is easy and goes quickly once you get started but there are some important things to do first.
- Remove any furniture that you can from the area. This makes it easier to move and prevents your from turning your favourite black chair white. If something is too heavy to move, cover it with a drop cloth.
- Put on a ventilation mask. Not a dust filter mask, but a ventilation mask. You want to make sure that you’re getting fresh air and a dust filter will not remove the paint vapour molecules from the air. (see fig. A)

- Put on some overalls or some old clothes.
- Place the suction hose from the airless sprayer into your paint can, press the trigger and start spraying. You’ll notice how the sprayer provides a smooth, quality finish and covers rough textures very well. (see figs. B and C)
- When not using the sprayer, put the safety on so that there are no unexpected spray patterns created on your walls or your floor.
- Don’t point a paint sprayer at yourself or anyone else. At 1700 PSI, the paint would be injected into the body. That is not good.
- You can use the sprayer for primer and paint. If you are using the sprayer for a finish coat of paint, just make sure that you don’t spray too close to areas that you don’t want painted and then follow behind with a brush. (see fig. D)
