Previous Project | Spraying Foam Insulation Next Project


Spray polyurethane foam insulation is the finishing touch to Brigitte’s mold clean-up effort. It’s the blue icing on her cake, if you will. She chose it even though it’s a little more expensive than regular batting insulation because it is a good choice for basements.


Filling in the Cracks

  1. It fills seams, crevices and cracks that would otherwise not have insulation. (see fig. A)
  2. It’s seamless so it’s waterproof. That’s important for basement environments. Moisture can often get trapped between batting insulation and damp basement walls. (see fig. B)

  3. It has a high R-value that helps save money on heating costs.
  4. It doesn’t shrink or settle over time.
  5. It’s easy to apply in the awkward corners and small spaces that we often find in basements. (see fig. C)
  6. However, once the insulation is in place, it must be covered in order to meet fire code standards. Only use spray foam insulation in areas that will be fully finished. (see fig. D)
