Before Brigitte’s Tuscan dream becomes a reality, she gets stuck on the side of the road in Toomuch, her car, with a flat tire. Maybe she should change her car’s nickname to NotsomuchIcanthandleit.
Flat Out!
Brigitte’s stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire on her car, Toomuch. Sick of waiting for roadside assistance, she takes matters into her own hands.
- Get all of the tire-changing apparatus from the trunk of the car. It’s usually under the covering in the trunk. You’ll need the jack, jack handle, lug wrench (better known as a tire iron), and spare tire. (also known as the “doughnut”)
- Place the jack under the notches underneath the frame of the car. Of course, place it near the tire you are replacing.
- Attach the jack handle and start turning it to raise the vehicle.
- Before the tire is completely off the ground, use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts on the tire. Brigitte offers a little tip by stepping with her full weight (all 120 lbs) onto the tire iron to loosen the nuts.
- Go back to the jack handle and continue raising the car off the ground. Unscrew the lug nuts and pull the tire off.
- Put your spare tire back in place and screw the lug nuts in to secure the tire.
- Use the jack to lower the car to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
- Do not drive excessively fast or for long distances on the spare tire. The “doughnut” is only a temporary fix for your car. You can now safely drive to your favourite car service station to get a new tire and your favourite bakery for a real doughnut!
