Wire systems require wiring to be run throughout the house to connect the main alarm panel (usually set-up near the breaker box) with the various security devices. There are also wireless systems that need no wiring but require a battery in each security device to power the wireless transmitter that sends information to the main panel. Brigitte opted for a wireless system to save the trouble of having to drill holes and run wires throughout the house.
Some of the security devices in her system include:
- Pet-proof Motion Detector -- These detectors are usually positioned in the corner of a room where they can “see” the whole room. Since Brigitte has her beloved dog, Torchy, alone in the house a lot, the motion detectors she installs have two screens on them that sense movement. Both screens need to be set off in order to trip the alarm. The lower screen detects motion up to three feet off the floor and the upper screen senses motion above three feet. Assuming Torchy doesn’t change into “Mecha-Torchy the Seven-Foot Dog Beast” he should be okay alone during the day.
- Contacts for windows and doors -- These are placed on windows and doors throughout the house. If someone tries to open a door or window, the contacts are broken and this signals the alarm to sound.
- Glass Break Sensor -- Equipped with a microphone, it will set off the alarm if it hears the sound of breaking glass.
It is highly recommended that security systems be installed by a professional!
